MicroBiOil® by Neuron BioIndustrial, is a biotechnological solution to produce second-generation biodiesel from industrial by-products.
MicroBiOil® is based on micro-organisms capable of producing oils similar to those used to generate biodiesel from low-value carbon sources.
The first application of MicroBiOil®, patented by Neuron BioIndustrial, is to take advantage of excess raw glycerine from biodiesel production and turn it into oils to be used as fuel. This dramatically increases the initial raw material and minimises the production of residues.
The increase in biodiesel production has lead to a surplus of glycerine, the main by-product of this process. The price of glycerine has fallen ten-fold over the last few years, causing a negative impact on the economic balance of biodiesel production. In spite of this, glycerine has recently become a very competitive substrate to produce new added-value compounds through microbial fermentation. |
